For the love of god, Red Wings...

...Please win tonight's game! Because if you screw up tonight, and on Saturday, this little love affair that we're having is over. DONE! (I'm sure idle threats never hurt with skittish creatures like Datsyuk and Zetterberg!) It's the same old story-- since Soph may not get home until after the game starts, I'll be live blogging to keep her in the know. However, feel free to comment here while the game's going on. I don't want anybody to be homeless for tonight's game!

First Period

-So I actually missed the first five minutes because I was running around doing errands/showering, and when I'm finally ready to watch the game/blog, Pops is all over the computer. Then, once I gain access to the computer, Brian Rafalski scores. It's a wing ding wippie, AHEM, it's crazy here!

-Fitting, when we come back from commercial, they're playing Ozzy's "Crazytrain" at the Igloo.

-The Red Wings get a penalty and it's time for the Jaws theme... which still makes no sense to me considering the Sharks, but whatev. Meanwhile, Kris Draper blatantly gets up high on a hit from behind on Gonchar and now the Wings are two men down. Fabulous.

-The 5-on-3 expires, thank god, and Datsyuk even gets a shorthanded poke at the puck near Fleury! The Draper minor expires and the score is still 1-0. Pops: "They dodged a major bullet there!" Yeah, for cereal.

-Pierre McGuire interviews Therrien on the bench, and Cindy is strategically placed in front of him on the bench for a bit of a close-up. Vomit.

-Nick Lidstrom gets clipped in the face (no, not his pretty face!) and Adam Hall gets two minutes for it. Lidstrom is way more chill about being wacked in the face with a hockey stick than I would ever be... yikes!

-The puck takes a strange bounce and Fleury must corral it. He considers skeeballing it up the ice but ultimately opts to freeze it.

-I don't know if it's just because the crowd is entirely in white, but it is really hard to see here. The ice is like blinding again. Maybe it's just our TV... (Not that it would be a bad thing for Sid to be swallowed up by the White Album, essentially...)

-Right before the commercial, we get a gratuitous Sid close-up. The 'stache! Ew, the 'stache!

-Pops flips the channel and finds The Proclaimers singing their lone hit on some low-budget talk show. You know this ditty: "And I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more..." This is some nice in-game entertainment. And these guys look about 500 times cuter now than before they became total dads. What happened there?

-Because the commentators have told us about a zillion times that Dan Cleary would be the first Cup winner from Newfoundland, Pops yells, "Come on Daniel! Do it for the Newfies!" This line is delivered with a total Scottish accent. Thank you, Proclaimers (who are Scotsmen, I believe).

-Four Scary Headshots! Wee-oo! It's the usual trio of creepers, Zetterdouche, Osgood, and Fleury BUT today, they're joined by OT goal scorer Petr Sykora! His head seems significantly larger than everyone else's. But his facial hair/expression make him the perfect candidate to round out this quartet of odd pics. Sykie, indeed.

-As we discussed the other night, the Red Wings are indeed the country for old men. The commentators announce that the Wings have seven players older than thirty-five on their team. Damn, gramps!

-The period ends and we are treated to an interview with someone other than Sid! Yay! But I'm too busy hating on their constant usage of "Crowd Chant" to listen to whatever cliche Ryan Whitney's spewing. It just seems wrong for "Crowd Chant" to be used constantly anywhere other than Minnesota! It just makes me wild! *buh dum ching*

Second Period

-I haven't really been paying attention to the first seven minutes here, but Sid seems to have gotten banged up, courtesy of a big Brad Stuart hit. (DET's only former Shark?) This development, of course, is thrilling.

-Filppula scores finally, after approximately nine zillion chances on Monday. You go, boy with the unpronounceable name!

-I swear Pierre just said "Cindy," which made me do a double-take and then giggle.

-Gonchar bobbles the puck behind his own net and things get a little hairy, even without Dupuis or Zetterdouche on the ice.

-Sid's apparently back, and the Pens get a few good chances. Ozzy, though, is up to the task.

-Pierre interviews Mike Babcock who looks like a rabid dog or something. He's got some crazy eyes and seems a tad bit hyper. Pierre's head seems to have a calming effect, at least.

Well, the live blogging ended after the second period. I ate dinner and pretty much forgot about it. Ooops! But the Red Wings won of course, so we're thrilled! Yay! Yay for keeping Cindy from winning and thus being shoved down our throats even more! You go, Wings!

Aw, thanks Jess!

I'm still stuck at work, but I should be leaving soon. I might miss the first period, which is a bummer.

Soph said...

Hey Jess!

I noticed that Red Wings BFF's D and Z got the assists on Rafalski's goal.

Yeah, what's up with the Penguin's playing Jaws? Like that makes sense! Although I suppose they can't be playing the song from Happy Feet....

Jess said...

haha They SHOULD play someone from Happy Feet! Something more... Penguin-like...

I'm excited for D and Z then, I didn't notice that. What a lovely couple they are.

Oh, and I got your message. Sorry, I was in the shower. As you can see, the game hasn't been as insane as the other night!

Jess said...

Ooh, are you watching the intermission feature on Fleury? Let's just say, in the storied tradition of French-Canadian hockey players, he's no Steve. Geez, even long-haired Simon is preferable!

Soph said...

Showering?! Psh! Hockey is more important than showering!

Soph said...

Yeah. Even his accent isn't helping him...

Jess said...

If SHA's baccalaureate wasn't tomorrow night, hockey would take precedence over showering! What if this game goes to multiple OTs again??? My hair needs time to dry so it's not a total frizz-ball!

Soph said...

Excuses, excuses.

I'm sure Lidstrom never accepts excuses!

kristin said...

Hey ladies...just woke up from my nap...thank goodness for the recap, it's like I didn't miss a thing!

Jess said...

Ohmygod, I just got your e-mail. I'm hyperventilating over the link! I'm too skittish for this!

kristin said...

oh, and here is the blog you got linked by today...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/R-Kelly-hockey-fun-returns-It-s-The-Zetterberg?urn=nhl,86013

Jess said...

Hey Kristin! I'm glad I was able to fill you guys in!

Jess said...

I know, I just saw it! OMG!

Soph said...

Well, you have no choice because Kristin just commented the link! How exciting!

Kristin, I saw the ad for the iso-cams and I thought of you!

kristin said...

oh wow, I loooooove how quiet it is in the igloooooooo!

kristin said...

oooh! thanks for reminding me about the iso cams!

Soph said...

Yeah, at first I was sad that the Wings weren't able to win at home, but then I relized how much better it would be if they win in Pittsburgh.

Jess said...

Booo DET penalty! Geez, Lillja! Is this because you were today's Would You Hit It?

Soph said...

I think the iso-cams are Dats/Zetters and Sid/Malk. If I can remember anything.

Jess said...

Well OF COURSE it would have to be Datsyuk and Zetterberg, twinsies that they are!

kristin said...

ooh...iso cam shows cindy on the bench in pain!

Jess said...

Is Sid injured? Why's he all doubled over on the bench?

Jess said...

That was a big hit by Stuart there! I guess I can like him if he takes Sid out!

Soph said...

Stuart won some bonus points with me for that.

Soph said...

Jess, why are we the same?

Jess said...

Oh, and now that I've stopped hyperventilating, thanks for the link to the Yahoo Blog, Kristin! I doubt we would have found out about it without you!

Soph said...

I don't think I would have found it...

Jess said...

haha We're just the same person Soph. We're like D & Z!

But cuter. And less creepy (I would hope!).

Jess said...

I'm going to canvass the public: should I continue with the game journal? Or is it just superfluous?

Soph said...

I don't want to know which one of us would be Zetters...

Soph said...

Well, I read the diary. But you can do what you want.

Jess said...

Yeah, I think Pasha, candy-corn head and all, is preferable.

Hmmm... maybe I'll continue it. We'll see what happens...

kristin said...

jess, I like the game blog, but I don't mind if you stop if it's too much for you to keep up with...

Soph said...

Yeeessss!

kristin said...

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

kristin said...

fleury totally should have had that!

Jess said...

Woo! Filppula! He had a boatload of chances in game 5, so I'm glad he finally scored tonight.

Thanks for the feedback Kristin. I'll see how motivated I am to continue the blog!

Jess said...

Can we chill out on the "LET'S GO PENS!" please? Because you guys are losing.

Soph said...

I really want the Pens fans to be disappointed!

Soph said...

because I am bitter.

Jess said...

Does Babcock seem somewhat crazed to anyone else?

Soph said...

Nick Lidstrom is the perfect human?

K-Mart said...

Sami Kapanen retired yesterday. The world is a little bit darker today.

Jess said...

No no, we know who the perfect (hu)man is. Sorry Nick. ;)

Datsyuk's getting a penalty? He must really be doing his daily affirmations with Z!

Jess said...

Hey K-Mart!

I know, Soph and I are quite saddened by the departure of our tiny beefcake, Sami.

K-Mart said...

My dad is watching the Phils game, how goes the hockey side of sports.

K-Mart said...

Ugh, figures when I turn the game on the Pens start buzzing. I just want to see the Penguins get dominated. Is it too much to ask?

Soph said...

I wanted the Penguins to be dominated too....

K-Mart said...

And it looks like Malkin is finally in the building. It only took him six games to figure out the directions to the rink.

Jess said...

Yeah, of all people who could score, it had to be Malkin. He can go right back into hiding now, thank you.

K-Mart said...

Well, the Phillies lost, so I guess I'll be watching the rest of the hockey game.

K-Mart said...

Ok, here we go... here's to Crosby getting smashed again like that replay just showed

Jess said...

Oh, the Phils didn't get rain delayed? The weather's so gross today...

Jess said...

Somebody missed your instruction and took out the ref instead!

K-Mart said...

Nope, they didn't get delayed. But I will take the cooler, rainy weather vs. the intense heat I experienced for the past three days. OOOHHHH SO CLOSE.

K-Mart said...

Hey Franzen wears my number!

K-Mart said...

Wow nice trip. That was very casual.

Jess said...

Was FL fun, even with the excessive heat?

And I guess you once wore number 93...? (That's Franzen, right?) Did you play hockey?

K-Mart said...

Also, I gotta say, Valtteri Filppula has become my favorite hockey name. It's solid.

Jess said...

Somebody just took a nice tumble... a Pen other than Fleury!

K-Mart said...

Yea, I enjoyed FL, my cousin's graduation went surprisingly quick which was awesome.

I played hockey for 3 years in high school, and wore #93. I was a defenseman. My sister now wears my old jersey, which is also cool.

Jess said...

But there's various pronunciations to Filppula! Is it FIL-pool-la or fil-ip-POOL-a? I guess that's part of the appeal... try to say that sucker five times fast!

K-Mart said...

GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL

Jess said...

IS THAT A GOAL? What happened?

K-Mart said...

Fleury pushed it in himself!!!

Jess said...

OMG That's crazy! Way to use your ass, Fleury!

K-Mart said...

Fleury shook a little turd right out of the bottom of his pants and right into the goal.

Jess said...

Wait, that's from a song... Is that from Juno? Not the goal part, obviously...

K-Mart said...

Back to Filppula, the announcer are saying Fil-pull-uh

K-Mart said...

Haha yes, its "Anyone Else But You" by the Moldy Peaches, featured on Juno. But it fit the play.

Jess said...

Yeah, I thought it was FIL-pull-a, but Babcock said something like fil-ip-POOL-a. But then again, Babcock looks crazy, so I don't know that I would trust him!

Jess said...

Back about ten thoughts, that's good that you had a good trip! My cousin graduates Friday... I'm hoping it's short too! And that's cool that your sister wears your jersey now...

K-Mart said...

Babcock can coach the Flyers any time. I'd totally be cool with it. The Red Wings are so efficient at everything they do, I am just in awe.

Jess said...

Aww, Juno... I knew that line sounded familar but the Moldy Peaches stuff all runs together for me.

K-Mart said...

Yea, I like how we have three different convo's now. It's not confusing at all.

Jess said...

Didn't Babcock coach the Ducks when they went to the Finals in '03? I think he's got some prior Finals experience...

Jess said...

Sorry about that, I've got like total ADD tonight!

K-Mart said...

Yea he may have, whatever he does, it works.

K-Mart said...

Haha, it's not your fault. I post whenever a new thought comes into my head.

K-Mart said...

Tick... tick... tick...

Jess said...

It's hard, there's so mamy things going on at once (like this game plus various topics of discussion). Too many stimuli!

Jess said...

I don't know if it's just because the Pens are down, but the crowd looks strangely serene and angelic all in white...

K-Mart said...

There are three Detroit fans in the bottom right hand corner of the screen in the Pens end.

Jess said...

The Pens haven't had a shot in sixteen minutes? Did I just hear that right?

K-Mart said...

Yup, they've missed a ton of shots.

Jess said...

We're almost at the like two minute warning here... eeek!

K-Mart said...

TICK... TICK... TICK...

K-Mart said...

Oh now they call a penalty. How about the slash you just let go thirty seconds ago?

Jess said...

Penalty? Really? Grrr...

K-Mart said...

I'll just be happy to see Michelle, Cindy, and Evellyn cry their hearts out.

K-Mart said...

Wow how did they get away with that, the one guy played the stick away from Llija. That's a penalty.

Jess said...

Somebody's stick just went spiraling through the air...

OMG. Are you kidding me? What the hell, DET? You guys are a machine, remember?!

K-Mart said...

Gah this is frustrating. 45 seconds. Two clears to a Cup.

Jess said...

I know, for real. Don't you guys want to keep Cindy from a Cup too?!

K-Mart said...

GAME OVER

K-Mart said...

WOW! THATS AN AMAZING FINISH!

Jess said...

OMG That was scary! These guys didn't know whether to cry or celebrate!

Well, Detroit did it, thank god! You go, boys!

Jess said...

Who's gonna get the Conn Smythe? Osgood?

Jess said...

Handshake, handshakes! "Good game, good game..."

K-Mart said...

A moment of silence for what can only be known as the "Crosby Beard"

Jess said...

I'm sorry, I can't do it. Just the thought makes me giggle too much!

K-Mart said...

Franzen I'm guessing. He was the top scorer and also a great checker and defensive player.

Nadine said...

HELL YEAH! Woo-hoo! What a relief! Thank you, Red Wings.

Jess said...

Hey Nadine! I'm glad we can all come together... and cheer against Pittsburgh!

K-Mart said...

Heh, they're a very polarizing team. Well, and polarizing fans.

Jess said...

Uh-oh! Bettman in the house!

K-Mart said...

So Zetterberg gets the Conn Smythe, interesting. But well deserved.

Jess said...

Holy crap! You go, Zetterberg! Can I say it was all because of the latest As the Ice Melts? It brought him good luck?

K-Mart said...

BOOOOOOO! (That's for bettman and the death of old time hockey)

Jess said...

Where is Soph? Boo, she missed out on the Sidney dejection!

Aww, Nick Lidstrom! Time for the Cup hand-off!

K-Mart said...

I'm happy for Dallas Drake. I've always liked him. I'm also glad that Chelios (rat bastard) never played in the finals. Retire already.

Jess said...

Did you know Dan Cleary is the first guy from Newfoundland to win the Cup? They haven't said that a million times already!

K-Mart said...

I know Soph, what the hell? You're missing some great t.v.

I can't wait until there are pictures of Cindy crying. I will plaster my blog with them.

K-Mart said...

Lol, do we even care about Newfoundland? I mean, it's part of Canada, why does it matter where the players come from?

Jess said...

The Stanley Cup is beautiful... and so is a pouty, disgruntled Cindy!

Soph said...

I watched! I was just eating too!

I loved the loser shots of the Penguins juxtaposed with the happy the Red Wings. It was beautiful. I almost teared up.

Soph said...

Hey! I can't eat AND watch AND type. I'm only human, here!

Jess said...

Okay good, I was worried you missed out on some fabulous glimpses at pouty Cindy!

K-Mart said...

It would make my day if Cindy tried to steal the Cup away from the Wings. "MINE MINE MINE! Gary promised me a Cup if I dove and whined and wore my pedophile-ish beard and became the league's bitch. And he didn't deliver. I deserrrrrvvvveeee it!"

Soph said...

Ha! In your face Pittsburgh fans!

This moment is so beautiful. Siiigh

Jess said...

OMG K-Mart too funny! I'm sure Cindy's stewing in the locker room right now, thinking those very things!

Soph said...

Ah! I can't wait to look up pictures of the victorious and celebrating Red Wings and the mopey Penguins :)

Jess said...

Soph, Paulina will be thrilled... the better logo won!

Soph said...

We ALL know that's how the Stanley Cup is won... This play the game thing is just a ruse.

Jess said...

Why are we still talking about Cindy, Doc? FYI-He lost!!!

Soph said...

I just want to say that it was really nice to cheer for the winning team

K-Mart said...

Well if we were going by logos, then the best logo lost in the opening round. I freaking love the Caps logo. It's amazing.

Jess said...

What is the Caps logo these days? I can't even picture it...

Soph said...

I wonder if getting the cup handed to you last (before the Coaches and whatnot) is the equivalent of being picked last in gym...

Jess said...

Did they change it recently or am I just blanking out entirely?

Soph said...

Isn't the caps logo just a stylized "CAPITALS" with a hockey stick for the L?

K-Mart said...

Caps logo

http://www.sportslogos.net/images/logos/1/30/full/284.gif

Soph said...

They did change it because it used to be an eagle or something

K-Mart said...

It was that in the 70's and 80's, but they changed it in the 90's until this year when they rolled out the new uni's. Then they went back to the classic. It's my favorite logo in the game now that Dallas had to abandon the star shaped unis.

Jess said...

Okay, now I see the Caps logo. I guess it's kind of vintage-y looking... star spangled and such.

I don't know what my favorite logo would be...

K-Mart said...

Well, besides the obvious ;-)

Soph said...

What, the Penguins?

Soph said...

Or Dallas' home or the Ducks?

Jess said...

The PENS perhaps? ;)

Jess said...

Soph, why do we have one brain between us???

Jess said...

I think I'm better at picking out logos I DON'T like... Buffalo, Vancouver, Atlanta...

Soph said...

You really need to stop using all of my jokes, Jess!

K-Mart said...

I meant the Flyers being really good... but I just made a list of my top five logos:
Caps
Blackhawks
Canadiens
Flyers
Canucks http://www.sportslogos.net/images/logos/1/29/full/283.gif
Come on, what's not to like about that logo. Simple, elegant, hockey.

Jess said...

Well, you certainly wouldn't use my jokes... too corny, of course!

K-Mart said...

Bottom five logos
Wild
Panthers
Blue Jackets
Thrashers
Predators

Jess said...

K-Mart, I can't get your link to work. Which one is simple, elegant, and a general asset to NHL graphic design?

K-Mart said...

The Canucks logo that is the blue C w/ a white hockey stick in the middle.

Jess said...

I think it's the whale thing that throws me off. Is it necessary?

K-Mart said...

Do they still use the whale? Cuz I don't like that one.

Jess said...

Other than the Sharks and Flyers, I'm at a loss for enjoyable logos. Believe it or not, nothing stands out as much! :)

Jess said...

Okay, well at least we can agree on that. I'm pretty much looking at the tiny logos on the top of NHL.com so I could be wrong about the whale... but I thought it was part of the "C".

Soph said...

I enjoy the Wild's logo on an artistic level... It's kinda strange as a logo though...

K-Mart said...

Heh, well, you should work on that :-p In the mean time, I have to work tomorrow :-( So I'm leaving you guys for the night. Here's to the end of the 32nd year without a Cup.

Soph said...

I thought the whale was part of the C too...

Soph said...

Night!

K-Mart said...

Jess, google image search "canucks logo" and you'll see the one i'm talking about.

Soph, while the Wild's logo is very artistic and I love the color scheme they have, it's not a good hockey logo in my opinion because it has way too much going on. Logos are better off simple.

Jess said...

Good night K-Mart!

kristin said...

Okay, I know you've all left me, but I have to say, that GWG was my favorite goal ever. If I were a Pens fan I'd jump off a bridge after seeing Flower put that in his own net!

I laughed so hard and so evil-y that I sounded like some kind of maniacal comic book villain!

Soph said...

That goal was like Flower just putting the a red and white bow of the cup and handing it to Lidstrom.

I think Hossa's going to be dreaming about those last seconds for a loooong while.

I feel so evil, but I think the best part was the the Penguins lost at home. That was beautiful.

kristin said...

Yes, it was beautiful that they lost at home. I love the feeling, even if it was evil!

Jess said...

I think we're all united in our evilness on this one! I like the image of the Cup with a bow on it... thank you Fleury! I knew I could count on you to screw up sometime!

Soph said...

It was so perfect though...

Hey Pittsburgh, here's the Cup,... THAT YOU WON'T HAVE! HA HA HA!

Justin said...

Since nobody else answered this, hopefully you'll see this comment. The Jaws theme for Penguin power plays predates the team in San Jose. They've been playing it since at least the first Cup run, maybe longer.

...Okay, so you might have a point, here. I guess they stopped doing it for a while, and Ryan Malone (who obviously spent a lot of time watching the Pens growing up) got the guys who run the scoreboard/PA system to start playing it again for the playoffs.

Soph said...

Oh, thanks Justin for the clarification! I guess it just seems weird because when I think of Penguins (animal or team) I don't think of Jaws.

It was an entertaining series, though. This year's playoffs was full of close (but not enough) comebacks.

Jess said...

Ohhh, okay now it makes more sense! Thanks Justin! I'll try not to hate on it as much in the future, now that I'm in the know! :)
